Why the map is changing
For two decades, the standard route to the Maldives from almost anywhere in Europe ran through a Gulf hub. You flew to Dubai, Doha or Abu Dhabi, changed planes, and carried on. It was efficient, it was competitively priced, and it was the only option most travellers ever seriously considered.
That assumption is being dismantled — and not by accident.
Roughly a third of all visitors to the Maldives arrive via Middle Eastern hubs. When airspace across the Gulf closed following the escalation of the Middle East conflict at the end of February 2026, that dependency became a live problem: flights were cancelled, thousands of travellers were stranded in transit, and the Maldivian government stated publicly that it would prioritise increasing the frequency of flights that do not route through the region, according to reporting by the Maldives Independent on 2 March 2026.
Winter 2026/27 is the first full season in which that policy shows up in published timetables. The centre of gravity has shifted decisively towards direct flying from Europe — and, unexpectedly, towards France.
Air France extends its Malé season by two months
Air France returns to the Maldives on 18 December 2026, flying Paris Charles de Gaulle (CDG) to Malé twice weekly with an Airbus A350-900.
The news is not the route. It is the length of the season. Schedule filings published by AeroRoutes on 5 May 2026 show Air France has extended the service through to 7 March 2027, where previous seasons wrapped up in early January.
- AF268 departs Paris CDG at 20:15 and lands in Malé at 10:05 the following morning — a flight of just under ten hours, which puts you on a seaplane before lunch.
- AF289 departs Malé at 12:05 and arrives back in Paris at 18:55 the same evening.
A two-month extension matters more than it sounds. It means February half-term and early March — historically among the most reliable weather of the Maldivian dry season, which runs roughly December to April — are now bookable non-stop from Paris for the first time.
French bee links the Maldives and Sri Lanka on one aircraft
This is the most consequential development of the season, and almost nobody is talking about it.
From 19 December 2026, the long-haul low-cost carrier French bee plans to operate a triangular routing: Paris Orly (ORY) → Malé (MLE) → Colombo (CMB) → Paris Orly, twice weekly on an Airbus A350-900. Flight BF770 leaves Orly at 19:30 and reaches Malé at 09:25 the next morning before continuing to Sri Lanka. Frequency drops to once weekly from 10 March 2027.
Read that routing again. It is a scheduled Maldives–Sri Lanka combination trip built into an airline timetable.
Travellers have been pairing these two destinations for years — reef and lagoon time in the Maldives, then tea country, wildlife and ancient cities in Sri Lanka. Until now, the middle leg had to be stitched together separately, usually on a regional carrier via Colombo, with its own ticket, its own baggage rules and its own risk if anything ran late.
A single carrier operating both on one rotation removes that friction entirely. Combine it with Sri Lanka's free double-entry ETA, introduced on 25 May 2026 for 40 nationalities, and a two-country Indian Ocean itinerary has never been simpler to build.
The service remains subject to government approval, so treat the dates as intended rather than final until tickets are on general sale.
beOnd brings all-business flying from London and Paris
beOnd, the Maldives-based premium leisure airline that flies all-business-class cabins, is adding Europe's two largest long-haul markets.

Both are operated by Airbus A319s in a 44-seat configuration and A321s at 68 seats — cabins roughly a quarter the density of a standard narrowbody. The airline is also adding three weekly frequencies at Zurich and two at Munich for the winter season, per Business Traveller's report of 27 March 2026. All are pending regulatory approval.
For the London market in particular, this is the first credible all-premium non-stop alternative to connecting through the Gulf.
Already flying: Melbourne and Zurich

Maldivian began Australia's first-ever non-stop service to the Maldives on 18 May 2026 — a weekly Airbus A330-200 from Melbourne (MEL) with 18 business and 246 economy seats. It cuts a journey that routinely ran beyond 20 hours down to roughly 11. Seats are distributed exclusively as part of packaged holidays rather than sold as standalone tickets.
Edelweiss Air has operated Zurich (ZRH)–Malé twice weekly on an Airbus A340-300 since 3 July 2026, running through to 15 September — a summer-season service filling a window most carriers leave empty.

From the UK
beOnd's London launch on 16 December 2026 gives you an all-business non-stop for the first time. Everything else still connects, predominantly through the Gulf or via European hubs.
From France
By far the biggest winner this winter. Three separate non-stop options from Paris — Air France from CDG, French bee and beOnd from Orly and CDG respectively — where recently there was one short seasonal window.
From Switzerland, Germany and Austria
Edelweiss covers the summer from Zurich; beOnd adds winter frequencies at Zurich and Munich. Central Europe now has non-stop coverage across both halves of the year.
From the Gulf and the Middle East
Malé remains one of the best-connected leisure destinations from the region, with multiple daily services. Nothing here reduces that — the new European routes are additive, not a replacement.
From India and South Asia
The Maldives is a short-haul destination from most Indian metros, and India remains a top-six source market. The winter changes have little direct effect, but the French bee routing does open a neat one-way option for travellers combining the Maldives and Sri Lanka before flying onward to Europe.
From Australia
Maldivian's weekly Melbourne service is the only non-stop. Sydney, Brisbane and Perth still connect, usually via Singapore, Kuala Lumpur or the Gulf.
From North America
No non-stop exists or is planned; the Maldives is a two-stop destination from most of the US and Canada. The expanded European options do, however, make a Paris or London stopover a more attractive way to break the journey.
When to book
Three practical notes.
Schedules load roughly 10–11 months ahead. Winter 2026/27 inventory is already open for the confirmed services. Pending-approval routes — French bee and beOnd — typically go on sale once sign-off lands, which can be weeks rather than months before departure.
Christmas, New Year and February half-term are the constrained weeks. These are peak dates on thin, mostly twice-weekly services with a hard cap on seats. On a two-flights-a-week route, a full aircraft means waiting three or four days, not three or four hours.
Match the route to the transfer, not just the price. Arrival time into Malé determines whether you reach your resort the same day. Seaplane transfers to the outer atolls only operate in daylight, so a late-evening landing can mean an unplanned night near the airport. Air France's 10:05 arrival is close to ideal; a 22:00 arrival is not, unless your resort is a speedboat away.
The bottom line
The Maldives spent twenty years as a destination you reached by changing planes in the Gulf. Winter 2026/27 is the season that stops being the only sensible answer.
